The Tennessee Titans are entering the 2024 NFL Draft with a sizable need at EDGE. Denico Autry’s decision to join the Houston Texans in unrestricted free agency has created an early-down hole opposite Harold Landry III. Arden Key is best utilized as a rotational rusher, and Rashad Weaver isn’t a great fit for an expanded role.

With that in mind, we’ve swiftly identified four pass rushers the Titans could consider drafting at No. 38 overall.

DARIUS ROBINSON | MISSOURI

Robinson produced a career-high 8.5 sacks at Missouri this season as a versatile inside-outside weapon. Robinson is physical, violent, and powerful as a pass rusher. He’s not the twitchiest defender, but his alignment-versatile position reminds me a little of what Autry offered the Titans. If Robinson, who’s garnering some late first-round buzz, remains on the board at 38, the Titans should strongly consider drafting him.

MARSHAWN KNEELAND | WESTERN MICHIGAN

Kneeland is cut from a similar cloth in the sense that he’d give the Titans a different body type opposite Landry and Key. I think that’s appealing to Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson as he continues searching for different players to fill different roles.

Kneeland produced a career-high 4.5 sacks this campaign for the Broncos, bringing his career total to 13 quarterback takedowns. Kneeland consistently makes plays in the backfield. He’s an outstanding run defender, which would allow him to pair with Key nicely as two players with different body types and skill sets.

BRALEN TRICE | WASHINGTON

Trice showcased his talents to a national audience by sacking Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers twice in the College Football Playoff’s Sugar Bowl. Trice is also plenty athletic. The Huskies defender ran an outstanding 4.72 40 at the NFL Combine at nearly 250 pounds. Trice plays with a high motor and great hands, and he could appear on Tennessee’s shortlist at 38 overall.

CHRIS BRASWELL | ALABAMA

Braswell flashes terrific power on tape, a trait he pairs with first-step explosiveness and short-area quickness. Braswell produced career-highs in sacks (8.0) and tackles for loss (10.5) while playing opposite expected top-10 pick Dallas Turner this past season. Braswell is projected to be drafted in the range of Tennessee’s second-round pick.

The meeting occurred on Tuesday, the day before LSU’s Pro Day (3/27).
Nobody expects the Titans to draft a receiver with the seventh overall selection after general manager Can Carthon signed Calvin Ridley. It’s worth noting that Titans head coach Brian Callahan is self-admittedly a huge fan of receivers, and once voted in favor of the Cincinnati Bengals drafting Ja’Marr Chase ahead of Penei Sewell. We can’t totally rule out Nabers if he’s still on the board given Callahan’s affection for pass catchers.

Nabers produced 89 receptions for 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns for an explosive Tigers offense this past season. Nabers pairs explosiveness with rare acceleration and strength. Nabers is an outstanding route runner that routinely creates post-catch yards for himself.

The Titans still have a long-term need at receiver opposite Ridley given that the aging DeAndre Hopkins is entering a contract year. In other draft news, the Titans will host Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt on an in-person visit.
I love Brian Callahan

The Brian Callahan era is going to be unlike anything we have ever seen with the Tennessee Titans. This is going to be an innovative offensive team. The Titans have never been that in the 20+ years they have been in Nashville. It’s going to be awesome.

Kevin Clark of ESPN asked Callahan how the Titans plan to use Calvin Ridley. Callahan said it will be much like how the Cincinnati Bengals use Ja’Marr Chase:

I asked Brian Callahan about Calvin Ridley.

"You're looking at a very similar role to what Ja'Marr played."

That got us into a great discussion on QB-WR chemistry, Joe Burrow, Peyton Manning and the communicaiton that makes an offense great. *Awesome* This Is Football today. pic.twitter.com/RsjyFjMW5Q
— Kevin Clark (@bykevinclark) March 26, 2024

From Callahan’s answer:

He’s (Ridley’s) got great quickness. He’s got great speed. He can run all the different routes. You saw some of that in Jacksonville. He can win outside. He can win inside. He’s got a lot of different things he can do well.

Callahan also talked about the importance of Ridley and Will Levis being in constant communication during OTAs and the offseason program to build chemistry like what Chase and Joe Burrow have. Ridley wants to be a star, and this staff is going to tailor what they do on offense to his strengths. It’s going to be really full to watch!

The arrival of L’Jarius Sneed will have a profound impact on how the Tennessee Titans approach the 2024 NFL Draft

The Tennessee Titans acquired cornerback L’Jarius Sneed in a blockbuster trade with the Kansas City Chiefs over the weekend. The trade should become official later this week once Sneed passes his physical. Acquiring Sneed has a drastic impact on the Titans’ 2024 NFL Draft strategy.

Expectations are that the Titans will draft an offensive tackle with the No. 7 overall selection. That assumption has been left unchanged throughout free agency, where the Titans surprisingly haven’t added a tackle. They’re hosting Notre Dame OT Joe Alt on a pre-draft visit.

Analysts felt a cornerback or receiver may be the target at No. 38. That is one presumption that has drastically changed throughout the course of the offseason following the acquisitions of Sneed and Calvin Ridley. Titans general manager Ran Carthon may still consider a corner or wideout, but the Titans possess significantly more glaring needs elsewhere.

Defensive line and inside linebacker are larger needs than originally anticipated. The Titans downgraded at both spots by replacing Denico Autry and Azeez Al-Shaair with Kenneth Murray Jr. and Sebastian Joseph-Day. The Titans don’t even have a green-dot defender, with either Jack Gibbens or Otis Reese IV currently slated to start opposite Murray Jr., who is a reclamation project.

The 2024 class of linebackers is among the weakest of all positions in April’s draft, which leads to puzzling thoughts. Why have the Titans left themselves such few options at linebacker? Joseph-Day isn’t a legitimate nose tackle either, although the Titans may play him next to Jeffery Simmons on early downs. Inside linebacker and defensive tackle are larger requirements than cornerback following Sneed’s arrival.

EDGE is another position that could attract attention from the Titans in the draft. Head coach Brian Callahan called Arden Key a “rotational rusher” in a conversation with Paul Kuharsky earlier this week, which I’d say is accurate. That means there’s no early-down option opposite Harold Landry. A replacement for Denico Autry is needed. EDGE is a premium position, so the Titans may need to draft one at 38 if they feel they need an instant contributor.

Cornerback is now arguably the deepest position on the roster with Sneed, Chido Awuzie, and Roger McCreary filling out the starting three. Tre Avery and Eric Garror are backups. You can never have too many cornerbacks, so perhaps Carthon considers one at 106 or later. But cornerback is no longer a sizable need.

Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan expressed excitement over what Calvin Ridley and other offseason additions add to the roster

Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan spoke with Paul Kuharsky at the annual NFL owners meetings. There are several intriguing nuggets mentioned in this article. Most notably, Callahan sees Dillon Radunz as a guard. He mentioned Nicholas Petit-Frere and Jaelyn Duncan perhaps battling to start at right tackle (yikes). He also talked about adding pass rushers, safeties, and linebackers through the second wave of free agency, or via the 2024 NFL Draft.

Callahan didn’t speak on Sneed because the trading is still pending a physical. He did speak about other acquisitions on a defense that will be overseen by new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson.

“We’ve made some substantial efforts to improve the defense,” Callahan said. “Our intentions at the corner position [in reference to Sneed].
Kuharsky spoke with new Titans head coach Brian Callahan at the NFL’s annual owner meetings. General manager Ran Carthon is also in attendance. That’s presumably where news of Alt’s impending visit to Nashville surfaced.

Offensive tackle is currently the Titans’ No. 1 need entering the 2024 NFL Draft, which is approximately one month away. The Titans surprisingly haven’t addressed the position in free agency despite having needs at both left and right tackle. Carthon has instead focused on wide receiver (Calvin Ridley), cornerback (L’Jarius Sneed & Chido Awuzie), and center (Lloyd Cushenberry).

The Titans released Andre Dillard from his contract earlier this offseason. That means Jaelyn Duncan, Nicholas Petit-Frere, sometimes-guard Dillon Radunz, and swing depth signing Saahdiq Charles as the tackles on the roster. That is less than ideal.

Alt possesses the physical stature, strength, and movement skills necessary to develop into a franchise left tackle. Alt would be plug-and-play next to Peter Skoronski at left guard. Just imagine that All-Pro ceiling tandem working with new offensive line coach Bill Callahan.

Alt was a standout performer at the NFL Combine. The North Oaks, Minnesota native ran the 40 in a blazing-fast 5.07 seconds with an elite 1.74 10-yard split. Alt also leaped a 9-foot-4 broad jump.

Alt’s visit to Nashville brings him one step closer to being the Titans’ 2024 first-round pick.

Keeping Big Jeff happy is always a good idea!

One of the first things Ran Carthon talked about at his introductory press conference back in 2023 was Jeffery Simmons. At that time Simmons was set to play on his fifth-year option. Carthon said his first order of business was to make sure Big Jeff was a member of the Tennessee Titans long-term. He got that done very quickly when Simmons signed a 4-year, $94 million contract extension.

Simmons is now arguably the face of this franchise, so it is a good idea to keep him happy. Well, Carthon is doing just that with the trade for L’Jarius Sneed from the Kansas City Chiefs last night:

A good secondary is a defensive lineman’s best friend. Having what Paul Kuharsky said “might be the best CB trio in of Tennessee era” will make Simmons’s job up front a little bit easier. Giving Big Jeff and Harold Landry a couple of extra seconds to get to the quarterback will no doubt lead to more sacks and more turnovers.

There is so much to love about this move. Ran Carthon is telling us with his moves this offseason that he is shooting for a quick rebuild. They aren’t planning on waiting until 2025 to complete. They are going after it this year. There are still holes to fill, but they are giving out a lot of money to put Brian Callahan and his coaching staff in the best position to succeed right away. It makes so much sense when you have a quarterback on his rookie deal.

There are still holes to fill on this Tennessee Titans roster. On offense they still need probably two offensive tackles and a wide receiver. One defense they still need another pass rusher, another inside linebacker, and a safety. Some of that will come in the draft - hopefully the offensive tackle and the wide receiver with those first two picks - and some of that will still come in free agency.

Anyway you look at it, any narrative that the Titans are cheap and never want to spend money should be dead and gone forever!
